Christmas Showhouse

Lusting After Lucite

We love mixing unlikely materials to create dynamic spaces so naturally, we've been enamored with Lucite. We’re hooked on translucent wares for two reasons: they introduce a new dimension to a room full of rustic, industrial or French antiques while preserving some of the room’s visual space. So, a room that’s small or weighed down with stuff will open up and appear a little lighter. We used two of these white stump consoles (bottom) in our wine-tasting room at the ’09 Christmas Showhouse and designed a Lucite box filled with corks for the tabletop. It was the perfect element to include in our dark and compact space. Our clear picks include this chain link chandelier from West Elm; Lucite trunk, previously featured in House Beautiful; and acrylic wine rack from CB2 (imagine these installed wall-to-wall…wouldn’t that be striking?!).

Christmas House

Black, white and yellow! We love a challenge and certainly faced one when we selected a windowless space with cement floors in this year’s AH&L Christmas Showhouse. Thus, our objective: create an imitate space that begs for soft light and lots of company. The outcome: a dramatic wine tasting room swathed in yards and yards of black fabric, a pop of color and a study in geometry and contrast. Voilà!
